Aulet, Managing Director of the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship, distills decades of teaching and practice into 24 steps organized around six themes: Who is your customer? - Exhaustively practical: worksheets, calculations, and examples for every step
- Strong on unit economics (LTV, COCA, pricing) where most entrepreneurship books are weak
- Minimum Viable Business Product (MVBP) refines MVP concept - requires customer value, feedback loop capability, AND business model viability
- Sequential but explicitly non-linear - you iterate back through steps as you learn
What it misses
- 24 steps can feel overwhelming for early-stage founders who need to move fast
- Examples heavily skew toward MIT-style deep tech ventures; less applicable to SaaS, consumer, or service businesses
- Case studies thin - mainly Aulet's own ventures plus a few others
- Title is misleading: this is a manual for tech product startups, not a treatise on entrepreneurial discipline broadly
- Some steps feel like they could be combined; the 24-step structure seems partly arbitrary
The framework is more comprehensive than Lean Startup but less flexible. Best for founders who want structure and are building technically complex products.

The initial market segment you'll dominate completely before expansion. Choose ruthlessly; don't try to serve everyone.

Detailed characterization of who actually uses your product (distinct from buyer). Build for real humans, not abstractions.
Quantified Value Proposition
Specific, measurable value customers get. "3x faster" beats "improved efficiency." Numbers force clarity.
Decision-Making Unit (DMU)
Who's involved in purchase decisions - champion, end user, economic buyer, influencers. Map the whole system.
MVBP
Minimum Viable Business Product - MVP plus proven business model. Customers must get value, you must get feedback, AND you must be able to charge.
COCA and LTV
Cost of Customer Acquisition and Lifetime Value. LTV should be at least 3x COCA for viable unit economics.
