- Overly prescriptive at times: Ratey recommends 45-60 minutes of aerobic exercise 6 days/week, with 4 moderate days and 2 high-intensity days. This is ideal but unrealistic for most people. He doesn't emphasize enough that some exercise is infinitely better than none.
- Underemphasizes practical barriers: Time, motivation, access to facilities, physical limitations - these are real obstacles. Ratey addresses them briefly but doesn't offer enough practical strategies for overcoming them.
- Dated: Published 2008, pre-smartphone era. Doesn't address modern challenges (screen addiction, sedentary remote work).

This is as evidence-based as self-help gets.
Critics say the book is too technical and repetitive. Fair. But the core message is bulletproof: exercise is the most underutilized, overpowered tool for mental health and cognitive performance.
