The thesis

Everything interconnected is a system - and systems behave in predictable, often counterintuitive ways. By understanding stocks, flows, feedback loops, and delays, you can identify leverage points where small changes create large effects, rather than pushing harder in the wrong place.

Identify the feedback loops in any system. Balancing loops push toward equilibrium (thermostat → temperature); reinforcing loops amplify change (compound interest, viral growth). Most persistent problems exist because balancing loops resist your intervention, while reinforcing loops create runaway behavior. Find the loops before pushing harder.

    Every reinforcing loop eventually meets a balancing loop. The question is whether you hit the limit gracefully or catastrophically.

  4. Behavior persists because the system structure persists

    Changing people won't help if the system incentives remain. Change the rules, not the players.

  5. The best interventions change goals or paradigms

    Adjusting parameters (budgets, targets) is low-leverage. Redefining what success means is high-leverage.
