Christopher Palmer, a Harvard psychiatrist who has worked extensively with treatment-resistant mental illness, builds Brain Energy around one bold claim: mental disorders are metabolic disorders of the brain. He argues that mitochondria do far more than produce cellular energy. They also influence neurotransmitters, hormones, inflammation, gene expression, stress responses, and the creation and removal of cellular structures.
