Most organizations reverse it and automate work that should never exist. Apply the method to a bounded process, not as an excuse to ignore safety, law, expertise, or the people absorbing the consequences.

Critical summary

Walter Isaacson shadowed Elon Musk for two years, attended meetings and factory walks, and interviewed Musk alongside family members, employees, friends, and adversaries. The biography moves from a violent South African childhood through Zip2, PayPal, SpaceX, Tesla, Neuralink, Starlink, and the chaotic acquisition of Twitter. Isaacson organizes the life around a question he never fully resolves: are Musk's demons separable from the drive that produced reusable rockets, mass-market electric vehicles, and industrial systems built at unusual speed? The practical core is Musk's engineering method. He attacks requirements, deletes components, compresses cycle time, pushes decisions toward the factory floor, uses the idiot index to compare finished cost with raw materials, and launches short surges when ordinary management stalls. The psychological core is darker. Isaacson describes recurring demon mode, appetite for risk, emotional detachment, conflict, and a tendency to create emergencies that only Musk can resolve.

  • Often lets vivid narrative substitute for a firmer moral and managerial judgment about harm to employees, relatives, and public systems

The access is extraordinary but not neutral. Continuous proximity captures behavior that retrospective interviews would miss, yet it also risks adopting Musk's framing of every delay as bureaucracy and every critic as timid. Some subjects disputed their portrayal, and Isaacson corrected a consequential claim after publication, which weakens confidence in scenes that depend on contested memory. The verdict: an invaluable operating case study wrapped around a leader nobody should copy whole.
